Pictures of Duxford

Charles Pumfrey started his business in 1908 after 25 years at Cramptons as a traction engine driver and fitter. Initially he was based in Sawston but moved to Duxford in September 1908, when he purchased the ex public house The Elms and surrounding land (I wonder if there are sale particulars anywhere).

Threshing with steam finished about 1950 and the engines stood out of use in the meadow. One was scrapped in 1953 but others survive. When steam engine preservation got going in the mid 50s Bob Pumfrey started rallying engines,  and also buying and selling them. Bob lived at and farmed Temple Farm til he retired to Aldeburgh. He died in 1968, his 3 engines went to his 3 nephews, the land and his house "The Rustons"  in st John's street went to Jim Webb and subsequently sold.
